Douyin is not hard to download from. It is just different enough from TikTok that the habits you already have do not quite work.

Start here: the share text
Douyin's share button does not copy a plain address. It copies a block of text: a sentence, some emoji, a short code, and the real link somewhere in the middle.
Paste the whole block. Do not try to clean it up first. The address gets picked out of the text for you. Trimming it by hand on a phone is how people end up cutting the link in half.

This is the one habit worth building, and it catches everyone out once.
The addresses Douyin's servers hand out do not last long. A link you pulled out this morning and left in a tab will often have stopped working by the afternoon.
It looks exactly like a broken tool. It is not. The address expired, and the fix is to extract again from the share text.
Save the share texts, not the extracted links. The share text stays valid as long as the video is online. The extracted address does not.
The three kinds of Douyin post
They look similar in the feed and behave very differently when you try to keep them.

The photo post is the one that surprises people. It looks like a video in the feed — pictures moving to music — but it is a slideshow. The app builds it as it plays. There is no video file behind it, so nothing can hand you one.
You get the images instead. If you wanted the moving version, it does not exist as a file.
Long videos mean big files
Douyin allows much longer videos than people expect, and it has its own shows and series made for the app.
So a download can be far bigger than the fifteen-second clip you had in mind. A ten-minute video in 1080p can run past 500 MB. Check your free space before you start, and do not assume a slow download is a stuck one.
What quality you get
Usually 1080p, which is what Douyin stores for most videos. You cannot get more than the servers hold, and no tool invents detail.
What you can control is whether a second round of squeezing gets added on top. Saving from inside the app re-encodes the clip and stamps it. Taking the stored file does neither.
A quick way to check what you got: a one-minute vertical video in real 1080p usually sits between 15 and 40 MB. Much less than that and you were handed a smaller version.
The four reasons a download fails
In order of how often they happen.
1. The text has no link in it. Some share options copy only a description, or a code meant to be typed into Douyin's search box. Look for v.douyin.com in what you pasted. If it is not there, copy it again from Share.
2. The address expired. Covered above. Extract again.
3. The video was taken down. Douyin moderates heavily, and a clip that was up this morning may be gone by the afternoon. Open the link in a browser: if Douyin will not play it either, there is nothing left to take.
4. The link came through too many apps. A share text forwarded through several messaging apps often arrives mangled, with the link cut or wrapped in something else. Go back to the source.
Why it feels slower than TikTok
Douyin's servers are in mainland China. A request from Europe or America crosses the planet and comes back.
A few extra seconds is normal. If something takes noticeably longer than usual one evening, that is the route being busy, not your file being stuck.
You do not need the app, or an account
Worth saying plainly, because a lot of guides send people off to install things.
Installing Douyin outside China is genuinely awkward — on iPhone it lives in the Chinese App Store, so it needs a Chinese Apple ID. Creating an account is harder still, because Douyin is strict about phone numbers.
None of that applies to downloading. If someone sends you a share text, a browser is all you need. No app, no account, nothing installed.
